The putative Field Elm Ulmus minor sensu latissimo cultivar 'Purpurascens' was listed by Lavallée [2] in Arb. Segrez. 236, 1877, as U. campestris var. purpurascens, but without description, and later by Schneider in Ill. Handb. Laubh. 1: 220, 1904. Krüssmann [3] in Handb. Laubgeh. 2: 540, 1962, identified it as a cultivar. See also Ulmus 'Atropurpurea'.

Description

The tree has small leaves approximately 25 mm long, tinged with purple when young, but turning dark-green later, and usually remaining a shrub [1].

Cultivation

One tree reputedly survives at Lewes, near Brighton, UK.
